First In-Human Trial for Neuralink BCI

The Neuralink brain-computer interface (BCI) as backed by Elon Musk has announced recruitment for its first in-human trial is now open.

The PRIME (Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) Study will work to evaluate the safety and functionality of the BCI implant and associated surgical robot, and its effectiveness for enabling thought-controlled use of a computer cursor or keyboard by people with paralysis.

“The PRIME Study is being conducted under the investigational device exemption (IDE) awarded by the FDA in May 2023 and represents an important step in our mission to create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs,” an announcement via the Neuralink website stated.

People with quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, the most common form of motor neuron disease) may qualify to participate in the trial.
