3D Models Capture Complexity of the Brain

Australian healthtech, Tessara Therapeutics is helping to accelerate the discovery of better drugs for neurological conditions, thanks to its “3D Mini Brains” innovation.

The RealBrain 3D micro-tissue platform works to capture the complexity of the brain by creating functioning neural networks in an advanced polymer matrix.

Able to be produced in just three weeks, these models offer close copies of human brain physiology with outstanding reproducibility and optical clarity.

The technology is a major step forward for the industry, where animals are traditionally used to test the safety and efficacy of new therapeutic treatments, but often followed by a high failure rate when it comes to human clinical trials.

A recent finalist in the InnovationAus 2023 Awards for Excellence, Tessara is now commercialising the RealBrain platform, with its sights set on licencing the technology to universities, research bodies and pharmaceutical companies.
